| Duncan Peak climb on 8/8/99
Cross country hike into alpine drainage just west of Hyndman Peak. Gained main crest at 11300' Hyndman-Duncan saddle. Staying on the ridge or moving left onto south face didn't look like good options. Instead, I went right (on precipitous Wildhorse side) where a nice class 2 ledge system worked upward to 40' of class 3 handhold climbing, which exited very close to summit of Duncan Peak el 11755'. Was delighted to find this easy way on an otherwise difficult summit. Summit register was missing. Built up cairn and left register (since stolen). Returned same way. The ledges would undoubtedly be covered with high angle snow in early season.

| Captain Joseph J. Duncan, Jr (1912-1945), Tenth Mountain Division, US
Army. Pictured here, probably at Sun Valley, Idaho, with 4 year old
daughter Dorianne, 1944. Charles J. Sanders in his book "The Boys of
Winter" expertly tells the story of ski racer turned war hero Joe
Duncan. Idaho mountaineers can be proud of the man and the mountain
named for him.
